A little about Pilates
The Pilates method originated with one extraordinary man, Joseph Pilates. Born in Germany in 1880, he overcame childhood diseases including asthma and rickets to become a gymnast, boxer, circus performer and self-defence instructor.
Joseph Pilates opened his first studio in 1926 in New York with his wife Clara and it became popular between dancers of the day to improve their performance and rehabilitation.
Not much was spoken in his studio (English was not J. Pilates’ first language), so the method was taught heavily with hands-on corrections.
Pilates called his method ‘Contrology’ but this became known as ‘Pilates’ after his death in 1967.
His method was continued by teachers, evolving and developing and is now spread around the world, inspiring and helping many people with hands-on corrections for a healthier lifestyle every day.
